Car accidents are, unfortunately, all too common, and it is very easy to sustain an injury in a car crash. Some injuries are minor, and others are more severe, like traumatic brain injuries or TBIs. These injuries can happen to anyone anytime, but they are prevalent in car accidents.

traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have serious and long-lasting consequences. TBIs can range from mild to severe, but all of them require immediate treatment to minimize the damage to the brain. If you or a loved one sustains a TBI, it is critical to know the signs so you can seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Five signs of a TBI

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Confusion
  • Headache
  • Memory problems
  • Changes in mood or behavior

Loss of consciousness

One of the most common signs of a TBI, loss of consciousness can last a few seconds to several minutes or hours and can occur due to a direct blow to the head, a fall or a car accident. Loss of consciousness is one of the most dangerous symptoms of a TBI, as it may indicate that the brain is not getting the oxygen it needs.

Confusion

Another common sign of a TBI is when a person appears dazed and has difficulty thinking, reading, speaking and remembering things. They may need help following instructions and completing simple tasks like tying their shoes.

Headaches

Headaches are tricky because they happen to many people who do not have TBIs. However, they can be a symptom of one. If the headaches are severe, especially if they begin or worsen after a car accident or blow to the head, they could be a sign of a TBI. Sometimes, headaches will be accompanied by sensitivity to light and sound.

Memory problems

Memory problems can be a sign of a TBI. If a person has trouble with short-term or long-term memory, concentrating or paying attention, they may have sustained a TBI.

Changes in mood or behavior

A TBI can cause changes in mood or behavior. People can become irritable, agitated or depressed after a car accident or blow to the head, which may very well indicate an injury to the brain. People can also have trouble controlling their emotions or have sudden outbursts of anger.

The list above is not a complete list of signs or symptoms of a TBI. If you have been in a car accident, it is essential to remain vigilant and under the care of a physician.

Traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs, are severe and can be life-threatening. Understanding the signs and symptoms is critical, so the individual seeks medical assistance immediately. Time is of the essence when it comes to injuries to the brain, and it is imperative not only to understand the symptoms but also to act quickly.
