Five signs of a traumatic brain injury in a car crash

On Behalf of | Jan 8, 2024 | Catastrophic Injuries, Motor Vehicle Accidents

Car accident victims in Virginia often end up hitting their heads on the dashboard, steering wheel, window, or door because of the momentum from the collision. These types of head injuries can result in traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).

A TBI can be classified as mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the patient’s symptoms. Here are five of the most common signs of TBI that you should look for when someone suffers any sort of head trauma.

Headaches

Headaches are common after someone experiences a mild heady injury. However, when the headache persists or proceeds to get worse over time, it may indicate a moderate or severe TBI.

Cognitive issues

Many people with head injuries have trouble with processing or retaining information. Confusion, poor memory, inability to pay attention, or difficulty understanding may all be signs of a TBI.

Nausea and vomiting

It is common for people who have suffered a head injury to experience nausea and vomiting soon after their injury. If the nausea persists or the person is repeatedly vomiting, it is possible that they have a more serious TBI.

Behavioral changes

A person suffering from a TBI may not seem like their usual selves. A TBI can cause a person to become more irritable, depressed, or anxious, or experience sudden mood swings.

Sleep problems

Inability to fall asleep, difficulty staying asleep, or sleeping more than usual may all be signs of a TBI. A person with a more serious TBI may also have trouble waking up once they are asleep.

If you have suffered a TBI or any other serious injury in a motor vehicle accident, you may be able to file a personal injury claim against the party responsible for your accident. If your claim is successful, you may recover damages for medical expenses, lost wages, and other expenses relating to your accident.
